About

Hello and welcome!

I'm Aviva Pressman and I’m a medical illustrator, educator, writer, animator, and voiceover actor with a passion for making science approachable. I am truly a one stop shop, creating educational materials and videos from start to finish. For 15 years, I’ve worked in medical schools in Los Angeles and around the country, specializing in empathy, trauma-informed care, and medical simulation.

My journey as a medical illustrator began while writing curriculum for a lactation company. We realized there simply weren’t enough accurate or inclusive visuals to help healthcare professionals teach breast/chest feeding. So, I started drawing them myself and learning on the job. Since then, I’ve honed my craft and received training through the Biomedical Visualization and Communication program at the University of British Columbia, the UCLA Design Communication Arts program, and several other wonderful educational institutions.

Humor and empathy are critical parts of my toolkit—I believe they make learning stick, and patients feel cared for.  Because of my experience in medical schools I have a vast knowledge of physical exams, history-taking, and all forms of patient-physician interaction.

I’m easy to work with and believe one of my strengths is versatility not only in my artistic skills but also as a colleague. I’m happy to work collaboratively or independently, bring my own ideas, or bring yours to life with clarity and compassion.

Every new client brings a new challenge, and I love meeting new challenges and learning new skills. So if you're looking for something unlike anything you see on my site, feel free to ask! I'll let you know if its possible and I'll be honest if I'm not the right person.

Certifications

Biomedical Visualization and Communication

The University of British Columbia offers this unique program that combines art, science, critical thinking, co-creativity, teamwork and communication skills. Through this program I not only improved my visual art skills, but developed a strong pipeline and means of collaboration.

While I have taken some unconventional routes to arrive at this career, I have also studied graphic design at UCLA. This certification program has given me skills in typography, color methodologies, and design theory, as well as helped me advance in motion graphics.

Design Communication Arts

Trauma-Informed Care

This is one of those certifications I got so I could really call myself an expert, but most of my trauma-informed care knowledge comes from over 15 years working in medical simulation and teaching from a patient perspective. I have the certification now too though, so you have to trust me.

SAMFE

This certification in the Sexual Assault Medical and Forensics Exam and my subsequent experience helping train others for their certifications makes me uniquely qualified to create empathetic and accurate materials surrounding sexual assault.

Humanitarian Clowning

Through The Clown School, I have studied the ways that comedy and clowning has positive impacts in hospital, medical, and refugee settings. I can create materials that use the tool of comedy to make learning fun for pediatric and adult patients alike.

Anatomy for Artists

The Anatomy Master Class for artists focuses on how to draw human anatomy by visualizing musculature and understanding natural proportions. Digital painting is one of my specialities and having these skills refines my work into something beautiful.
